New Cottesloe Gallery Opens Its Doors

Gullotti Galleries has relocated to a new address in Napoleon Street, Cottesloe with more space and an art-inspired architectural fitout that will benefit artists and patrons alike. Situated at the centre of this charming boutique retail strip in the heart of the western suburbs, the new gallery is the perfect complement to the mix of eateries, fashion and homewares stores already in the area.

Gallery owner Paul Gullotti wanted to move past the ‘large, obvious and fairly boring single gallery space that is done so often’ where the whole gallery can be seen from the street. Paul sat down over coffee with North Fremantle architect Matthew Crawford and Matthew drew up a series of rough sketches that have since formed the basis of the new gallery. The idea was to evoke a series of layers and intimacy, and a rich ‘inner life’ to the gallery by creating a series of ‘five rooms within the room’.

The proportions emulate the scale of a residence where most artworks will be hung. Arched colonnades in the fitout are inspired by the art of surrealist painter Giorgio De Chirico who references the Renaissance architecture of Italy in his art. Heritage features such as the old timber floorboards, which were originally covered up, have been revealed and given a new lease of life to pay homage to the character of the Napoleon Street enclave.

Conceived as a place to not only view, appreciate and purchase art but to feel it as well, the new Gullotti Galleries invites the visitor to make themselves at home and spend time relaxing on comfortable furniture sourced from Mobilia. We look forward to welcoming you soon.
